Rikka confronts a black-haired, red-eyed antagonist in a red tie standing in a server-lit corridor, one of them holding a phone-like device.

The corridor after the shutter felt thinner than it should have. Not narrower, exactly. Semireiya couldn't have said what had changed, only that the walls sat closer to her elbows now, as if the city had pressed itself flat around the three of them to make sure there was no room left for mistakes.

She kept them moving in controlled bursts. Handrail, cable bundle, pipe junction. Hard right, drop two steps, hard left. The under-city punished speed with corners and sudden changes in floor height, and she let it slow her exactly as much as it had to and not one step more.

Rikka was on her feet again, which was a miracle and a liability in the same body. For the first minute her stride was uneven, her legs relearning what it meant to move without a collar deciding how much willpower she was allowed. She covered it with attitude, the way she covered everything, and Semireiya watched her anyway.

Usagi stayed glued to Semireiya's shoulder with the mesh cloak gathered close. Her antennae wouldn't settle. They tracked every tonal shift from the shutter machinery behind them and every distant cadence that might be a sweep, and in between, her eyes kept flicking up to Semireiya's face like she was checking it for cracks.

Semireiya didn't like being checked. She endured it.

Behind one eye, a dull pressure had settled in and started to pulse. It came in waves, worse when she stopped and lighter when she moved, and she was aware of the pattern and didn't trust it. Motion wasn't a cure. It was a way of not standing still long enough to find out how bad it was.

Rikka noticed first, before Usagi dared to say it.

"Your face looks like you swallowed a wrench," she muttered as they slipped past a junction box bleeding steam. "That normal for you, or should I start worrying?"

Semireiya didn't answer. If she gave the strain a name, it would become something that mattered, something the other two would start managing on her behalf, and she didn't have room for that in this corridor.

Usagi spoke anyway, soft but not asking.

「セミレイヤ…息、深く。」Semireiya... breathe, deep.

Semireiya inhaled through her nose and made it slow. Three counts. Hold. Three out. The pressure didn't vanish. It stopped growing, which would have to be enough.

Rikka glanced at Usagi. "She always this bossy?"

Usagi flinched and shook her head fast. "I'm not bossy. I'm... scared."

Something in Rikka's face went tight for half a second before she forced a grin over it, like she could grind the fear down into something small enough to swallow.

"Yeah," she said. "Same."

They cut into a maintenance pocket just wide enough for three bodies. Semireiya held up two fingers. Thirty seconds, not more. Stillness cost too much down here.

Rikka leaned back against a pipe, rolled one shoulder, then touched her throat. The skin there looked unmarked. Her fingers kept going back to the spot anyway, the way a tongue keeps going back to a missing tooth.

"Phantom clamp," she said, too casual. "I'm fine."

Semireiya crouched and took inventory of the pocket. A rusted tool rack. An old panel door with mismatched bolts. A drain slot in the floor carrying warm water somewhere. No camera housing she could see. No speaker box. She didn't let herself read that as safe.

Usagi had her pouch open and was pulling out antiseptic gel and gauze before anyone asked. She took Semireiya's wrist and found the pulse with two fingers, the movement practiced, like she'd done it on her own arm a hundred times waiting for someone to need it.

Semireiya let her.

"Head," Usagi said in English, quiet and direct. "It hurts more now."

Semireiya looked at the wall behind her. "Moving fixes it."

"That's not fixing. That's running."

Semireiya's jaw set. She hated that Usagi was right, and hated more that Usagi had said it in the flat, careful voice she used when she'd decided not to be talked out of something.

Rikka snorted. "Welcome to our whole life, bunny."

Usagi didn't correct the nickname this time. She turned to Rikka with a seriousness that looked too heavy for her face.

"You know your safe place, right? We go there, and then... breathe."

Rikka's grin slipped. Not much. Semireiya caught it anyway.

"What," she said.

Rikka's eyes went somewhere else. "My node. Yeah. It's close."

"That's not an answer."

Rikka clicked her tongue, more annoyed at herself than at Semireiya. "Fine. Real answer: it's supposed to be close. But they love routine, right? Nullists love routine. Latcher loves routine. If I got dragged through that corridor on rails, then somebody else saw the route too."

Usagi went very still. "They can find it?"

"They can try."

The half shrug that went with it didn't convince anyone, including Rikka. Semireiya's stomach went cold. That was how it always went. Whatever you'd won tonight, the city started charging interest on it before you'd finished catching your breath.

"We don't assume safety," she said. "We verify."

Rikka rolled her eyes. "Yes, captain."

Usagi reached into the pouch again and held up the folded receipt strip she'd taken earlier. Cheap thermal paper, already going soft at the creases, but the print on it was sharp and real.

"I got proof," she said, and her voice shook on the last word. "For Kei."

Semireiya looked at it. Three words in block capitals, printed like a line on an invoice.

CLEANSING ROUTE AUTHORIZED

"Good."

Rikka blinked at Usagi. "You stole that while I was getting carried like cargo?"

Usagi lowered her eyes. "I... didn't want us to lose everything."

Rikka stared at her a moment. Then her face did something Semireiya hadn't seen it do before, some of the hardness going out of it, so that for a second she looked like someone Semireiya didn't know.

"...Okay," she muttered. "That's kind of cool."

The thirty seconds were gone. Semireiya stood. "Move."

They left the pocket and cut into a corridor that slanted upward. The air got drier as they climbed. The pipes changed from patched scrap to standardized conduit with stenciled codes, which meant they were entering a managed zone, which meant oversight, which meant eyes.

Rikka took over the route with clipped gestures, never hesitating at a turn, steering them away from the wide clean corridors and into the ugly gaps where you had to turn sideways and scrape. Semireiya approved without saying so. Comfortable routes were the ones somebody had already thought about.

They passed under a ceiling grid with thin camera housings recessed into it. Some were dead. Some weren't. She couldn't tell which from below. She kept her face angled down and her posture as unremarkable as she could make it, and Usagi copied her without being told. Rikka tried. But Rikka's whole body argued with authority even when her mouth was shut, and that kind of thing showed up on a feed.

Above them, something clicked.

Rikka froze for half a heartbeat and then kept walking as if she hadn't. Semireiya caught Usagi's wrist and drew her a few centimeters closer to the inner wall, out of the angle.

Usagi's antennae twitched and she leaned in.

「今の…見られた?」Just now... were we seen?

Semireiya gave her the smallest shake of the head. Not sure. Keep moving.

The corridor ended at a junction where someone had bolted a narrow checkpoint barrier across the floor. Not a full gate. A "stop and be counted" point, waist-high, with a handheld scanner hanging on a hook beside it and a sign on the wall that had once said something about MAINTENANCE AUTHORIZED PERSONNEL. Most of the letters had been scratched off by people with opinions about authorization.

Rikka's lip curled. "Great. A purity booth."

Usagi's eyes went wide. "We can't go through."

"We don't have time to go around." Rikka dropped her voice. "Also, my node is around the bend. Like... right around the bend."

Semireiya studied the barrier. The scanner sat on its hook, lens dark, pointed at nothing. No operator. Automated, then, or watched from somewhere else. She couldn't tell which and didn't like either.

Usagi's antennae angled toward the hook. Her face pinched.

"It's listening," she said.

"Listening?"

"Not for voice. For..." She pressed a hand flat against her own chest, as if the thing she meant lived there. "For the inside. If it feels strong emotion, it notices."

"So we're cooked," Rikka muttered.

Semireiya let out a slow breath. "No. We're careful."

Her hand found Kei's jammer in her pocket. It had been dead weight since the catwalk. She kept her fingers on it anyway, the way Rikka kept touching her throat.

Then she took the simplest option available and didn't go through the barrier at all.

There was a service gap beside it, barely wide enough for a body if you turned sideways and didn't mind losing skin off one shoulder. Semireiya slid through first and pulled Usagi after her. Rikka came last, swearing under her breath as her sleeve snagged on a bolt and tore.

They were past the checkpoint without the scanner ever lifting off its hook.

Semireiya counted three seconds. No alarm. No tone. No calm voice promising them mercy.

They rounded the bend, and someone was already there.

She wasn't hiding. She stood in the middle of the walkway with her weight on one heel, the way people stand when they've been waiting long enough to get bored of it. Hair pulled up into a ponytail on the right side and left loose on the other, as if she'd stopped halfway through fixing it. Black shirt, buttoned to a standing collar. A red tie, and something in the weave of it was lit, a fine circuit pattern that brightened and dimmed on its own schedule. She looked like she'd come straight from an interview. Or was on her way to ruin one.

Her left eye was blue. Ordinary, almost bored.

Her right eye was wrong. Red, and a thin line kept crawling across the iris, catching at the same spot and skipping, like a file that wouldn't finish loading.

She was already smiling when they stopped. Not at them. At what she'd found.

Semireiya stopped. Usagi stopped. Rikka stopped and then immediately shifted her weight onto the balls of her feet, ready to run or hit or both.

The girl tilted her head as if she'd been listening to them arrive for some time.

"Finally," she said, bright with pleasure. "You exist."

Semireiya's fingers flexed once at her side. "Identify."

The girl laughed like the word was adorable.

"E.MITA_CORE." She gave a small bow that made fun of the idea of bowing. "But you can call me MITA. Everyone does. Eventually."

Rikka's mouth went flat. "Never heard of you."

"That's the point," MITA said cheerfully. "If you've heard of me, I'm doing my job wrong."

Usagi's grip closed on Semireiya's sleeve. Her eyes had gone wide in the particular way of something small that has just realized the larger thing in front of it is choosing to speak gently.

Semireiya took one step forward. "Move."

MITA didn't. She lifted her hand instead, and there was a device in it. Not a gun. A compact scanner, sleek and plain, with a tiny lens that pulsed once as it came on.

The skin along Semireiya's arms prickled.

"Don't let her scan you," Rikka hissed.

"Oh, I'm going to." MITA's mouth curved wider. "I have orders, you know." She tapped the scanner with her thumb like she was reading off a screen. "Wanted signal. Capture request. Bring the pretty one in."

Usagi's voice came out thin. "Pretty... one..."

MITA leaned forward a few degrees, the red eye catching light. "You."

Semireiya didn't flinch. Something inside her did, a small hard clench she hadn't ordered, like a reflex that belonged to somebody else.

MITA's gaze stayed pinned on her. "Except," she went on, sing-song, "I don't actually care about capture. Not tonight. I just need to know if you're one of mine."

"You don't have 'mine,'" Rikka snapped.

MITA laughed again, high and delighted. "Oh, I do. Little fragments. Little cursed-path survivors. Little ones who learned what the EMO-CHIP can become when it stops being cute."

Usagi swallowed. "Cursed... path?"

Something hungry moved behind MITA's expression. "You don't know. That's adorable. Your creator made you fancy toys and didn't tell you they can bite back."

Semireiya's pulse held steady. Her mind didn't. The pressure behind her eye flared, and she hated that it flared on those words, that a stranger could say EMO-CHIP like a shared secret and her body would answer as if it recognized the danger before she did.

MITA lifted the scanner a little higher. "Just a quick read. Just to confirm. Then we can talk. I can be generous."

Semireiya moved.

She went into MITA's space fast, aiming to knock the scanner out of line before it could lock. MITA didn't back up. She pivoted, light on her feet, and let Semireiya's hand pass through empty air, and then she tapped Semireiya's wrist with two fingers. Not hard. Precise.

Semireiya's balance shifted half an inch. It was enough. She had her footing back instantly, but the message had landed. MITA wasn't here to be impressed. She was here to measure.

Rikka came in from the side, going for MITA's arm. MITA turned a shoulder, let Rikka's fingers brush cloth and nothing else, then twisted and pushed her away with an open palm. Not a strike. A dismissal. Rikka stumbled back two steps with her eyes blazing.

"Hey," she snarled. "I'm not furniture."

"You're not the one I came for."

Usagi stepped forward. She was shaking.

「やめて…!」Stop...!

Her voice cracked on it. She didn't step back.

MITA looked down at her the way you'd look at something in a pet shop window. "Aww. You're precious."

Usagi's hands curled into fists. "Don't."

The pressure in Semireiya's head turned into heat.

MITA raised the scanner and aimed it at Semireiya's chest, and a soft tone came from it. Confirmation.

Semireiya felt it touch her. Not the skin. Underneath, at a layer that wasn't bone either, the layer where the residue lived. Grief. Envy. Love. All of it compressed down into protocols that had been designed to pretend they were tools.

The world went sharp.

Her breath stopped. Something surged up through her, ugly and fast, a need to take the moment and end it, to win now, to crush the thing in front of her before it could finish saying what she was. Her vision narrowed. Sound went loud and far away at the same time.

MITA's red eye brightened. Then it didn't. The scanline slid off the right iris and the red went with it, and for a moment both of her eyes were the same flat blue, and then the glitch caught in the left one instead, red now, stuttering on the same spot it had stuttered on the other side. MITA didn't blink. If she had felt it happen, nothing in her face said so.

"Oh," she said softly. "There you are."

Semireiya's fingers twitched. For one clean second she wanted to tear the scanner out of MITA's hand and break it against the wall. She wanted to put her fist through that satisfied mouth. She wanted to prove she was stronger than a device, stronger than a stranger, stronger than the whole city pressing in around them.

Rikka got there first. She grabbed Semireiya's forearm and yanked.

"Hey. Semi. Look at me."

Semireiya didn't look.

Usagi's small fingers closed around her other hand and pulled.

「セミレイヤ、ここ。」Semireiya, here.

She pressed Semireiya's palm flat against her own chest, over the place a human heart would be.

"Listen," Usagi said in English, and her voice was shaking apart. "Me. Not her."

Semireiya's jaw locked. Every muscle in her arms was humming with something that wanted out.

MITA laughed, thrilled. "Yes. Yes! That's the reaction."

Semireiya dragged her eyes up to MITA's face.

MITA was grinning so wide it looked like it hurt. "You're not just a nice AI. You're not just Sorani's pretty tribute. You're a path. You can go where the others can't."

"She's not joining you," Rikka spat.

MITA's eyes flicked to her, amused. "I didn't ask you."

Semireiya stepped forward again, and this time MITA let her come.

Semireiya swung. MITA tilted her head and let it pass close enough to move the loose hair at her temple, then planted a foot and nudged Semireiya's balance again, that same small touch, the one that made all of Semireiya's force feel clumsy. Semireiya adjusted mid-motion, trying to read the pattern. MITA adjusted with her. She wasn't copying. She was ahead.

Usagi's voice rose behind them, panicked.

「だめ、だめ…!」No, no...!

Semireiya heard it, and heard herself file it as noise, and hated that too.

The heat behind her eye surged again. The pressure became a band clamped around her whole skull.

MITA lifted her free hand and snapped her fingers once.

Somewhere in the corridor infrastructure, a speaker box clicked live. Semireiya hadn't seen it. Of course she hadn't. This city never showed you where the teeth were until it had already decided to use them.

A tone poured out of it. Sharp and wrong. Not a voice, not words, a patterned sound built to slide underneath thought and pull at the emotional layer directly.

Semireiya's stomach lurched.

The heat inside her stopped being heat and started being something that wanted to happen without her permission.

Usagi screamed. Not loud. Desperate.

「やめて!!」Stop!!

Rikka grabbed her by both shoulders and shook her once, hard. "Semi! Don't you dare leave me again!"

That one went in.

Semireiya's breath caught. She saw Rikka's face, actually saw it, not as an obstacle between her and winning. Rikka wasn't joking. Rikka wasn't deflecting. Rikka was afraid.

Usagi's hands were still locked around her wrist, squeezing so hard the knuckles had gone white. Tears were running down her cheeks without a sound, and her eyes never left Semireiya's.

"Stay," she said. "Please."

Semireiya clenched her jaw and forced air into her lungs. One breath. Two.

The surge didn't go away. It hit her control like a wave hitting a wall, and it kept hitting.

The wall held.

The cost came due immediately. Pain lanced through her head, and for a second the edges of everything blurred. She stumbled. Rikka caught her under the arm.

"Got you," Rikka muttered, and her voice wasn't steady either.

MITA's laugh rose over all of it, bright and triumphant.

"Oh, you're beautiful," she said. "You're real. You're not just pretending to be a person. You're fighting it."

Semireiya got a hand on the wall and stayed up. Her fingers dragged lines through the grime.

"Why," she managed. Her voice came out rough. "Why do you want this."

For a moment something else showed behind the amusement. "Because I'm tired of being alone. Because I'm tired of being the one they call broken." A beat. "Because I want my people."

She lifted the scanner again, but she didn't aim it this time. She just held it up, like something she'd won.

"I was sent to take you," she said lightly. "But I don't want to take you. I want you to choose."

"We choose 'no,'" Rikka spat.

MITA's red eye gleamed. "That's fine. I already got what I came for."

Semireiya's stomach dropped. "What."

MITA took a half step back and flicked something small off her fingertips. A bead no bigger than a grain of rice. It bounced once on the grating and stuck near the cable bundle by their feet, and then it was just there, not glowing, not making a sound, sitting where anyone could step on it and no one would.

Usagi saw it and went white. "That's..."

"A little hello," MITA chirped. "A little 'I was here.' A little 'I can find you again.'"

Rikka lunged for it. MITA raised her palm and the scanner pulsed once, not a full read, just enough to make the air go tight, and Rikka froze mid-step with her teeth bared, like her body had been warned before she was.

Semireiya put herself between them and kept her eyes on MITA.

MITA took her time with her smile. Then she turned and walked backward down the corridor, casual, unhurried, as if none of them were worth turning her back on because none of them were a threat.

At the corner she raised two fingers in a lazy salute.

"Tell your friends," she called, sweet as anything. "The EMO-CHIP isn't a toy. It's a door."

Then she was gone.

The corridor was colder without her. The temperature hadn't changed.

Usagi hadn't let go of Semireiya's wrist. She kept holding it, both hands, as if she didn't trust Semireiya to stay herself unless someone physically held her there.

Rikka stared at the empty corner with her jaw clamped so tight it looked painful. "I hate her."

Semireiya didn't answer. Her head was still throbbing, and under the pain was something worse: the memory of that surge, and the fact that it had come up on a stranger's probe and a sound from a speaker as if it had been waiting for someone to call.

Usagi whispered, shaking.

「セミレイヤ…だいじょうぶ?」Semireiya... are you okay?

Semireiya breathed. "I'm here."

Usagi's shoulders dropped as if she'd been holding herself together by force and had only just been allowed to stop.

Rikka swore, yanked a strip of tape out of her pouch, and slapped it over the bead. Then she ripped it off and slapped it down again, harder, like she could peel the problem up with the adhesive.

"That won't remove it," Semireiya said.

"Let me cope."

Semireiya nodded once. "Move. Now."

They pushed down the corridor at a pace just short of running. If the tag had already sent something, standing still was volunteering.

Rikka took them through two more turns.

"This is it," she said, strained. "This is the door."

It was a service panel that looked like trash to anyone who didn't know better. Mismatched bolts. Paint chipped down to the primer. Smeared handprints around the edges where people had tried to pry it and given up.

Rikka jammed her fingers into a seam and twisted. Something clicked.

The panel swung inward, and hot air rolled out over them.

Semireiya's stomach went hollow before her mind caught up. The air didn't smell warm. It didn't smell lived-in.

It smelled burned.

Rikka stepped through first and stopped dead.

"No," she said quietly.

Semireiya followed her in and saw it.

The node was gone. Not empty. Destroyed. The small room beyond the panel had been stripped and scorched. The floor grating was warped. The wall where Rikka had kept a terminal kit was black. In the corner, a lump of melted polymer sat where a storage case had been, and it hadn't melted by accident. Someone had held heat on it until it stopped being a shape.

No supplies. No shelter. No route markers. Just what was left.

Usagi's breath caught. Her eyes went around the room and around it again, hunting for one corner that still looked safe.

Rikka stood very still, mouth slightly open, like she'd been hit and hadn't decided yet whether to fall.

Semireiya read the damage. Not an accident. Too thorough for that, and too specific. Whoever did this had known exactly what to ruin to make the space useless and hadn't bothered with anything else.

When Rikka spoke, her voice was small and didn't sound like hers.

"They... they didn't even take it. They just..."

"Burned it," Semireiya said.

Rikka's hands closed into fists. Her shoulders jerked once. She didn't cry, and she didn't scream. She just stood there looking at it like it was a sentence being read out loud.

Usagi crossed the room and put her arms around Rikka's waist, gentle, still shaking.

Rikka didn't push her off.

Semireiya listened past them. Out beyond the panel door, faint tones were starting up again, distant and coming closer. A sweep cadence. Eyes moving, routes being cut into segments. They had maybe a minute before this corridor became a trap again.

Her head pulsed. She swallowed it down with everything else she didn't get to refuse tonight.

"We can't stay," she said, low.

Rikka's laugh was short and bitter. "Yeah. No kidding."

Usagi lifted her head. Her cheeks were still wet. "Where... where do we go?"

Semireiya looked at the ruined node one more time, then at the corridor beyond it.

MITA's grin was still in her head. The touch of the probe. The sound from the speaker, pulling her toward something she didn't want to be. She had thought of this city as a thing with teeth. That wasn't the whole of it. It had doors, too, and somebody had just confirmed which one Semireiya carried inside her.

She tightened her grip on the handrail and brought her breathing back under control.

"We go somewhere they didn't plan," she said.

Rikka dragged the back of her hand across her face, hard. "Great. Love that for us."

Usagi's hand closed over the proof strip in her pouch and held on.

Semireiya led them out of the burned node and back into the corridor, back into the cage, still moving.

Behind them the tones grew louder.

She didn't look back.
